Do clothes make the man?

From Mark Cuban's blog... Wondering who Mark Cuban is? Here you go.

Why am I such a suit hater ? I'm not a suit hater, I just could never think of any good reason for any sane person to wear a suit in the first place.

Exactly what purpose does a suit serve ? Why in the world are so many people required to wear a suit to work ? Do the clothes make the man or woman in the western world today ? Does wearing a tie make us work harder or smarter ? Is this a conspiracy by the clothing, fabric or dry cleaning industry to take our money ?

Or are we all just lemmings following a standard we all know makes zero sense, but we follow because we are afraid not to ?

If you are a CEO , are there not better things your employees could spend money on than multiple suits, ties, dress shirts, dress shoes, dress socks, dry cleaning, and all the other associated costs ? Gee, no suits would be the same as giving your employees a tax free raise. Think that might make them happy ? Or do employees consider having to spend money on suits a perk ?

I don't like wearing suits either.

If I was a billionaire, I wouldn't have to.

Oh wait, I'm female. I don't have to wear suits anyway! :)

But I hate high heels and hose!!!! Why do women have to wear dresses, heels, pantyhose, and little cute jackets matching their skirts cleverly designed to emulate men's suits when they go to work?

I love wearing a suit. Can't explain it, but I love it.

Can you modify the color on your comments link? It's so dark that even when I highlight it, I can't see it. :)

I like suits okay, but I get a neck-ache from wearing a tie-- apparently, I move my neck just enough to tweak it.

Funny comment, Brent.

Interesting take on suits & formal wear... I sense a disturbance in the force Brintus... art thou frustrated w/Mark Cuban, or just with the social norm that places pocket protectors in the dress shirts of Math teachers? Or...

My take - I have a suit... & if you see me wearing it, you'll know that someone is getting married or buried.

I, like Cuban, don't have a "hate" of suits... I dislike the "you have to do it because everyone does it..." type of reasoning that goes along with it.

One scenario that always cracks me up is formal occasions on the missions field. We show up in suits & ties, despite the fact that its 110F & 99.9% humidity, & despite the fact that we're in a village that doesn't even have running water, & despite the fact that the people that live in the village are wearing a) little to nothing or b) traditional garb that fits the climate...

i had a big rant and then erased it. simple gist = not dressing up (or appropriately) at certain times conveys, due to our societal norms, a lack of interest in or importance placed on an individual or event when it is expected that one dress appropriately.
e.g. job interviews, weddings, etc.
